A platypus
Feathers, Fur and Fins: A song about platypus

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  F–2

Watch as a platypus emerges from its burrow on the bank of a billabong (small lake).

As you watch, listen to Don Spencer's song as he describes seeing a platypus and explores its unusual looks.

Things to think about

  1. 1.If you were to write a song about a platypus what lyrics (words of the song) would you include? How might you use the words 'shy', 'glides', 'eyes' and 'fur'? See how the songwriter includes these words in the platypus song.
  2. 2.How do the words (lyrics) of the song help you understand where the platypus lives, what it looks like and how it moves? Listen to the way the writer compares the body parts of the platypus with other animals.
  3. 3.What did you learn about the platypus from the song? How does the writer describe the platypus? What comparisons are made? Why do you think that the writer describes the platypus as a 'magical creature'?
  4. 4.Write a description of a different Australian animal. What animal will you describe? How would you describe it? Think about its features. Does it have long legs? Fur, feathers or fins? Sharp teeth, claws or strong jaws?
