Have you ever seen someone create a rocket using a film canister?

In this clip, Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman creates a mini-rocket powered by a chemical reaction.

You will find out what two substances he combines to propel his mini-rocket, and you will find out how it works!


Things to think about

  1. 1.What propels a rocket upwards into space? Think about what form of energy it uses to move and how this creates thrust (or force).
  2. 2.What two ingredients were added to the 'bottle rocket'? Watch carefully to see evidence of a chemical change when the ingredients are added. What type of substance is formed?
  3. 3.Find out what happened to the pressure in the bottle when the substances were combined. What is the name of the force that pushed the rocket upwards? Which force had to be overcome for the rocket to launch? Write a chemical reaction to explain the rocket launch. What safety issues should be considered when conducting this type of experiment?
  4. 4.Find out about the chemical reactions used for the propulsion systems used in real rockets. What new technologies are being developed to improve rocket design and performance?
