For the Juniors: Visit a restored 19th-century cottage

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4

Take a trip back in time to discover what some Australian homes looked like in the past.

Visit an old miner's cottage that was built long ago.

Explore the kitchen, the living room and the outdoor toilet.

Imagine what your life would be like if you grew up in this home.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever wondered what it would be like to grow up long before your grandparents were born? What might your home have looked like if you lived long ago? What things about your daily life would be different?
  2. 2.What are the cottage walls made from? How was the cooking done in this kitchen, without electricity? How did the people who lived here long ago have a bath?Where did the water they used come from? Why is the toilet built away from the cottage?
  3. 3.Pause the video to take a close look at the kitchen and living room. What things do you see that are different from the things in your home? How are they different? What things are the same? Imagine that you could talk to the people who first lived here. What questions would you ask to find out about their daily life?
  4. 4.Keep a list of the things you use in one day that the people who first lived in this cottage did not have. Ask someone at home to do this too. What would it be like to live without these things for one day? Write or record a story about one day living in this cottage long ago.
