Outback House: Accommodation on the station

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  5–6

Take a look at the buildings that will be home to the station's residents for the next three months.

The men have a lot to do to make it comfortable before the women and children arrive.

Things to think about

  1. 1.The men arrive at Oxley Downs with a wagonload of supplies. What furniture, clothing and food would you pack for your first month at an outback sheep station? Remember, there will be no electricity and no running water.
  2. 2.Look carefully at the buildings. What materials are used on the roofs, floors and walls? How does the overseer get a drink of water? What is different about the squatter's house? Why? What was Dan the shepherd's first task? What problems is he facing?
  3. 3.How do we know about the building materials and housing styles that were used in the 1860s? Where would the building materials have come from? Why? How might the buildings on an outback sheep station be different today?
  4. 4.Search online for 'Outback House ABC' and explore the 'Behind the Scenes' material on Oxley Downs. Imagine you are the historical advisor for the builders. Collect useful sources of historical evidence. Use search terms like 'colonial settler homes Australia'. Search collections like Trove and Picture Australia. Sites ending in '.gov' and '.edu' are often the most reliable. What do these sources tell you?
