ABC Rosh Hashanah: Synagogue and teachings

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  3–4

Have you ever attended a religious ceremony?

Nearly all religions have their own special ceremonies for weddings, funerals and other special events.

This clip explores the ceremonies that Jewish people have at Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How long do you think special religious ceremonies take: hours, days? For millions of Jewish people around the world, spending the best part of a day in the synagogue is considered a normal part of their new year celebrations.
  2. 2.During Rosh Hashanah, at around what time of day do the services at the synagogue usually begin and end? What do you notice about where the men and boys and the women and girls are seated in the synagogue? The Torah is the Jewish religion's holy book. What role does it play in the service for Rosh Hashanah?
  3. 3.Many religions ban certain things. For example, Jewish people do not eat pork. Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. Many Hindus will not eat meat. Look again at the classroom scene and explain why the teacher said that Jewish people could not use a cow's horn for a shofar.
  4. 4.Do some research to find some stories in the Torah that are also told in the holy books of Christians and Muslims. Find out the meaning of Yom Kippur and what it has to do with Rosh Hashanah.
