You can read maps using compass points such as north, west, south-west and east.
On a compass, north is shown as N. South-west is SW.
Explore the compass diagram to find out what the other letters mean.

Imagine you are standing where the white star is on the map.
My Place is west of the star.

To understand a map, we need to know the
distance as well as the direction.
Maps have a scale that shows distance.
Here, the scale is shown underneath the map on the bottom-right.

Using the scale, you can see that My Place is three kilometres (3 km) from the star.
Select the star and then move the cursor around the map.
Move from the star to My Place, for example. You will see that it is 3 km west of the star. Then select My Place.

Well done! Now we need to go from My Place to North Camp.
First select My Place.

The North Camp is five-and-a-half kilometres (5.5 km) north-east of My Place. Find the North Camp's position on the map and then select it.
The Forest Cave is two-and-a-half kilometres (2.5 km) SW of the North Camp. Can you find this on the map?
Now let's find the Hill Top. It is 3 kilometres north-west (NW) of the Forest Cave.
Next we need to find the Beach Camp.
Go eight kilometres (8 km) south-east from the Hill Top.

Well done! You have found all the features on the map.
